El Elyon (God Most High)
After God worked a majestic deliverance for Abram and his 318 trained men traversed 240 miles – rescuing Lot, women, and people from enemy captors, Melchizedek (king of Salam and priest of God Most High) blesses both Abram and God Himself in the name of El Elyon (God Most High).
When used with God, El means “highest” or “exalted one.” Elyon was the title given to the top Canaanite god and was appropriated by the Hebrews as a title for Yahweh to express their understanding that their God was the highest and the most in every aspect of life. It is the LORD who is the highest in every realm of life.
When El Elyon enters the fight, as He did via Abram, He truly is the Most High over all in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
In the NT, Jesus is known as “the Son of the Most High” (Lk 1:32) and the Holy Spirit is the power of the “Most High” (Lk 1:35). Moreover, all who belong to Christ are revealed as “sons and daughters of the Most High” (Lk 6:35).
When we praise El Elyon, we worship the God whose power, mercy, and sovereignty cannot be matched. He calls the shots. He has the first and final say. No one else is higher than El Elyon. Call on His name!
